Thin, Icy Spots, Rocky Spots, Bare Spots

The conditions here are sub par. The trails are very icy. There are parts of the trails that don't have coverage at all. I would going to Bristol if you want to enjoy your day on the mountain. I had hoped that over the years they would improve their conditions, but the haven't.

Groomed, Refrozen, Thin Spots, Uncrowded, Calm, Sunny

I'll start out with the positive... this was the best the conditions have been, by far, all season long. No crowd, bright sun, calm... it doesn't get much better than this. Now the not-so-positive side... the groomer guy still needs to do a lot of things he's NOT doing now. Grooming 101- make the skiing BETTER for the paying customers, not worse! He needs to quit tilling so deep in the thin spots and push some snow from the very thick spots to the thinner spots and then groom it out... very simple. Next - DON'T leave the big chunks all over the hill. Back up and grind 'em up, they're not nice to run into or to try to avoid, especially when they're frozen down. Next, don't run the tiller SO fast, it nearly melts the snow which then refreezes harder than a rock, it should be loose on top when you're done, not solid. Other than the not-so-positives, it was a great day! I can't wait for more just like it.

Thin Spots, Rocky Spots, Uncrowded, Snowy

They got about 4" of powder during the night. The skiing was a lot better than it's been all season. The groomer operator does continue to bring up rocks all over the place... unacceptable. He must also run the tiller much too fast which nearly melts the snow and makes it excessively hard when it settles. It would be nicer to leave some nice loose stuff on top. They did make some base last weekend which translated into nice skiing this weekend. It snowed quite hard last night and during the morning so we had some fresh powder to slide around in, that makes it real nice. Can't wait to get out there tomorrow.

Bullet-Proof, Thin, Thin Spots, Icy Spots, Rocky Spots, Uncrowded, Making Snow

I was there at opening. They were still making snow all over the hill with "whales" all over the place. I hate to be critical but what was groomed was done badly. You can tell that the groomer operator isn't a skier, he left chunks and ridges all over the place. Just because he can probably mow lawn doesn't mean he can groom a slope properly. Get rid of him and pay whatever you have to get an experienced operator or your ski area won't survive... the snow/grooming is just TOO nasty. I rode up the lift with a variety of folks who said they won't come back unless it improves. There was a 1-pass groom down Mile which made it almost good but all the others, excepting lower Brewer were pure crap, and I really hate to say that. The groomer has brought up rocks all over the place, left chunks the size of softballs and just must not realize people DON'T want to ski on that stuff. I'm sorry but I can't recommend going to SWAIN until things improve greatly.

Groomed, Refrozen, Thin Spots, Icy Spots, Bare Spots, Uncrowded, Making Snow

I got there at opening time and the groomers were still out doing their thing (better than doing it at night and letting it "set up".) The only thing was that from our 60+ degree weather this past week we were left with some very thin spots and last night's 4" snowfall didn't help too much. At least they're taking advantage of the +6 degree weather to make some good snow to fill in the thin spots. I think, today, that Mile was about the best... lots of fresh, homemade snow and there were no bare spots on it. The top of Wheels was covered with softball-sized chunks and the groomer did a bit of "gardening" on it (brought up some rocks and dirt.) Lower Robinsons was pretty good as was lower Brewer. With any luck tomorrow they'll have all their new snow moved around and groomed so it'll all be MUCH better all over the place.

Groomed, Thin Spots, Uncrowded, Sunny, Making Snow

I'm writing this at about 1:30 PM. It was pretty nice first thing this morning, it actually felt like winter, sun coming through the clouds, a few snow flakes in the air and the temp around 10. They were still making snow on some of the trails, for most of the morning, to take advantage of the chill. Some of the trails/slopes still lacked decent grooming (lots of ridges, balls and chunks) but others, like lower Brewer were just about perfect. Mile was great, 80 acres was chunky, Clark was good, Wheels was good, Robinsons was chunky on top, good the lower part. Very nice overall, except for the thinner spots here and there. I hope it lasts and gets even better..

Groomed, Thin Spots, Uncrowded, Making Snow

This is the best it's been all season! I did all the trails that were open and liked most of them. They used this past, very cold, week to make tons of snow. Clark-very good, Mile-very good, wheels-chunks but OK, Pine-chunky (needs grooming), Brewer-chunky top, very good to excellent lower, Robinsons-chunky top, very good lower. 80 acres/Rattler-not open, needs grooming. That isn't all of them but it'll give you a good idea. I'm headed back there tomorrow. Now if they could just teach the lift attendants to clean snow off the seats.

Groomed, Thin Spots, Bare Spots, Uncrowded, Sunny

I was there about opening time and, what was open, wasn't too bad. Clark was open top-to-bottom but only half of the slope wide. What was there was pretty good. Only the lower halves of Brewer and Robinson's were open but they were pretty good. They had a race on wheels and that was pretty nice. Good, turnable snow. They need more, whether they make it or get it from mother nature. I'll probably go out tomorrow 'cause it'll be chilly enough tonight for 'em to make some fresh stuff. What I'd really like to see is WINTER get here, finally. See you on the hill!

Groomed, Refrozen, Thin Spots, Bare Spots, Uncrowded, Calm, Flat Light

I... just...can't believe....they....didn't...make...more...snow! Overall the skiing is just so so. Also, they need to get an EXPERIENCED groomer operator who knows enough to NOT bring up all the dirt and stones PLUS make the surface skiable and non-hazardous (less crevices, ridges, etc.) Clark is pretty good, but hard frozen since it was groomed and there's "death cookies" (chunks of snow) all over the place, they're just like large ball bearings and they're not pleasant to ski on. The bottom line is that they need MORE snow.

Groomed, Refrozen, Thin Spots

I was really disappointed this morning. I got there a few minutes after 9 and they were just starting up the snow guns on the closed trails. From talking with a local I found out that they didn't even make snow during the night (~20 degrees...?) which he could hardly believe and the management surely should have done. The areas that were groomed were stiffer than concrete (they must have done it last night, not early this morning. The groomers also brought up stones in a bunch of places where the snow was thin. I didn't last long but it looks as if the temp is going to head up toward 30 so the stiff snow may loosen up a little later... that would be great! Another criticism would be that the chairs on the lift were all covered with ice... something the employees should have taken care of well before opening. About all it would take is a whack with a short piece of pipe or something to get rid of the built-up ice. Ice on the seat makes the ride up quite unpleasant. Lots of room

Tracked, Thin Spots, Uncrowded, Calm, Snowy

I skied from 10 'til noon, that's all my legs could take for the 1st time out this season. It was nice that we got that 15+ inches the other day and today we ended up getting at least another 5 or so. I was a bit disappointed that they didn't have anything major open from the top. I skied mostly the lower half of Robinsons' and round top. The natural snow was great but I hated to see the boarders skidding it all off the steeps. It would have been OK if there were a decent base underneath this new snow. They ought to take the groomers out and just run 'em up and down the hill, without using the tiller, to get the snow packed down with their tracks for some sort of base. I'm going out again tomorrow to make sure I develop some "snow legs" before the season gets in full-bloom. It was well worth going today.
